WHORE

(dir. by Lisa Light)

*in the spirit of freedom I will be performing blogging by free-association*

I absolutely adore the medium of video because I love over-analyzing everything, and once the video is published there is so much to see and discuss. This video in particular was full of metaphoric imagery that was historically based. It was so easy to perform and to imagine.

This project felt a bit controversial for me, but every artist must take a risk and perform outside of the beloved and safe boundaries of marketing and expectation.

“Rosario Despierta Recuerdos” and I am awakening the memory of the foundation of it all: gogo dancing in the clubs for women. Oh, man. What a blessed time that was! I felt like we were all nymphs dancing on the island of Crete, Dionysus’ daughters (or mothers?) never fearing the night, because the night was our underworld much like Persephone, but unlike her, we were not trying to come back from the depths.

“In the name of adulthood” and all is lost.  No. Not true. In the name of assimilation. All of our great communities were colonized, and many avenues of freedom were lost, but that is where the beautiful iconography of this video comes in to play. No! There are still those who dare. They don’t have check the box lives, but dammit… they have freedom.

WHORE.

Jesus’ best friend was a whore. Because at the end of it all he realized that whores (read: outcasts) tow the line of freedom. The cross was freedom. Freedom to speak out against injustice, Freedom to question his almighty Father who had forsaken him. Yes, Jesus questioned God. He said, “Why did you DISS me like that???” And yet, Jesus was loyal to his people, to his convictions, until the death. Well, if it is good enough for Jesus…

I am honored. Why? Because I “got out alive” is a quote from the song of the same name, “Whore.” When I worked for the Punany Poets, the founder told me, “life is difficult outside of the box, but so much sweeter.” Film Noir. A bunch of vixens who murder. The original “murda bizness,” but the video is an homage to a time that was actually pre-film noir, the flapper era, which was cut short by the financial collapse and subsequent re-definition of women’s roles which produced the Baby Boomers. Yep. That was the sequence: Flapper Female Awakening Awesomeness, Great Depression Everyone Brokedness, WWII Back to Tradition/Patriotism, Capitalist Awakening (we won and got paid).

When my Grandmother used to get really mad she would shout, “WHORES!!!” It was a cleanse for her anger. Conjure up the whores. They will hold your anger.

Love El Elle, Love Zari Le’on Dance Theater. We made it.
